Automatically transcribe audio from Google Drive into an SRT file

Automatically transcribe audio and video files uploaded to a Google Drive folder and save the resulting SRT subtitle file back to Google Drive.

Requirements

Implementation

Configure the Google Drive trigger

  1. Go to Zapier home.
  2. Click on "Zap" under "Start from Scratch".
  3. Click on Trigger and select the Google Drive app.
  4. Set up the trigger:
    1. Trigger event: New File in Folder
    2. Account: Your Google Drive account
    3. Click on "Continue".
  5. Configure the trigger:
    1. Drive: Your Google Drive
    2. Folder: The folder where you upload audio or video files
    3. Include Subfolders?: False
    4. Include Deleted Files?: Only return non-deleted files
    5. Click on "Continue".
  6. Test the trigger:
    1. Click on "Test trigger".
    2. Select a sample record and click on "Continue with selected record". This step requires at least one file in the watched folder.

Filter media files

This workflow saves subtitles beside the recording. A filter step checks the MIME type before transcription so generated .srt files and other non-media files do not reach Speech is Cheap, preventing an extra failed run.

  1. Add a step by clicking on the plus below the Google Drive trigger.
  2. Select the Filter by Zapier app. Zapier automatically selects Filter conditions.
  3. Click on "Continue" to open Configure & test.
  4. Configure the filter conditions under Only continue if...:
    1. Field: Select Mime Type from the Google Drive step.
    2. Condition: (Text) Starts with
    3. Value: audio/
    4. Add an Or rule group.
    5. Field: Select Mime Type from the Google Drive step.
    6. Condition: (Text) Starts with
    7. Value: video/
  5. Click on "Continue". Zapier confirms whether the sample record passes the filter.

Filter media files by MIME type

Transcribe audio with Speech is Cheap

  1. Add a step by clicking on the plus below the filter step.
  2. Select the Speech is Cheap app, or search for it in the Zapier App Directory.
  3. Set up the action:
    1. Action event: Transcribe Audio
    2. Account: Select an existing Speech is Cheap account, or connect a new account by entering your API key in the API Token field.
    3. Click on "Continue".
  4. Configure the action:
    1. Input File: Select File from the Google Drive step.
    2. Leave Input URL blank.
    3. Speaker parsing, word parsing, and audio labeling default to False.
    4. Optional: Set Can Parse Speakers? to True if you want speaker labels such as Speaker A: in the subtitle text. Speaker parsing is an optional paid add-on; see the pricing page for rates.
    5. Fill out any other optional fields, such as Language.
    6. Click on "Continue".
  5. Test the action:
    1. Click on "Test step".
    2. The editor test returns sample transcription data. Refer to the Overview for how editor test samples differ from billed published runs, as well as shared input options and halting behavior.
    3. The Transcribe Audio action waits for transcription to complete before continuing, so a separate lookup step is not needed.

Upload SRT file to Google Drive

  1. Add a step by clicking on the plus below the "Transcribe Audio" action.
  2. Select the Google Drive app.
  3. Set up the action:
    1. Action event: Upload File
    2. Account: Your Google Drive account
    3. Click on "Continue".
  4. Configure the action:
    1. Drive: Select your Google Drive.
    2. Folder: Open the field menu, choose Custom, and select Parent Id from the Google Drive trigger step. This saves the subtitle file beside the recording.
    3. File: Select SRT File from the Speech is Cheap step. Use SRT File, which is the downloadable file object, rather than SRT Subtitles, which is raw text.
    4. Convert to Document?: False
    5. File Name: Select Title from the Google Drive trigger step.
    6. File Extension: srt
    7. Click on "Continue".
  5. Test and publish:
    1. Click on "Test step".
    2. Verify that Google Drive uploads a real sample .srt file beside the trigger file using the sample subtitle data.
    3. Click on "Publish".

Upload the SRT file beside the recording

Verify the implementation

  1. Upload a fresh supported audio or video file to the watched Google Drive folder.
  2. Wait for the published Zap to run. The filter confirms the MIME type starts with audio/ or video/, Speech is Cheap transcribes the recording, and Google Drive uploads the .srt subtitle file.
  3. Check the Google Drive folder to confirm the new .srt file appears next to the original media file. For example, recording.wav produces recording.wav.srt.
  4. When Google Drive triggers on the newly uploaded .srt file, the filter step halts execution because the MIME type is not audio or video, preventing an extra failed transcription run.

Notes

Files passed through Input File must satisfy the constraints in Input Requirements and Supported File Types. The Overview explains when to use Input URL.
